Science of ultrafast phenomena

Attaining light-control requires experimental approaches capable of providing accurate view for tracking the pathways along which electronic and structural degrees of freedom couple in real time to form photoinduced phases.
For this reason we use femtosecond pulses in the infrared (IR), visible and X-ray ranges

  • In our laboratory, we use optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) to tune the pump (or probe) wavelength from ~10 μm down to ~ 300 nm. Probing in the IR to UV range may provide information on the intermediates and their lifetime.
  • At large facilities we use ultrafast X-ray diffraction and Absorption to obtain information about the electronic and structural degrees of freedom at synchrotron and X-ray Free Electron Lasers (X-FELs).

The advent of X-FELs is particularly interesting since it allows to achieve temporal resolution that is unprecedented in the X-ray domain.
